Journeys’ staff provides the support necessary for individuals to become fully participating members of their communities. Individuals are trained to use and develop self-help, communication, socialization and functional academic skills in real-world settings, including stores, restaurants, banks, recreation centers, etc. People in this program also volunteer in the community. Individuals have volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Recycle Rutherford, and several other community programs.
Individuals work in Journeys’ Production Center, where they are engaged in productive, paying work. Subcontracts are procured from area industries. Individuals are trained in a variety of skills, including assembling, packaging, sorting, salvaging, collating, shredding and other light industrial skills. They are paid according to Federal Wage and Hour regulations.
Independent, competitive employment is the goal of this program. Journeys’ job placement specialists assist individuals in seeking and gaining competitive employment. Vocational coaches are available to provide necessary on-the-job training to individuals at no cost to the employer. Small groups of individuals are also placed in work crews in area industries with Journeys providing free supervision as needed.
Journeys strives to meet the special needs of all of the individuals it serves. The Health Care Oversight Program, staffed by case managers and a Registered Nurse, insures that individuals receive the specialized medical and mental health services they need. Physical, occupational, and speech therapies are provided, as well as counseling and social work services. Individuals placed in competitive employment are provided ongoing support and retraining help through the Follow Along Program. Retirement activities are also provided to senior citizens.
Journeys believes in supporting the full integration of people with intellectual disabilities into regular neighborhoods and the community at large. The Supported Living Program maintains its participants in their own homes with staff teaching such skills as cooking, housekeeping, grocery shopping and money management.
Since most people with ID can’t drive, transportation is provided to those we support in an effort to further their independence. Journeys’ drivers help people get to work, to the center, to medical appointments and even to recreational activities.
